Sobratema’s ‘Instituto Opus’ (Opus Institute) implemented an initiative to update the courses it offers for the training of Riggers and Rigging Supervisors. The institute’s training center sent Ricardo Sávio, an Opus instructor, to Germany to visit Liebherr - one of the largest manufacturers of equipment with almost 33 thousand employees worldwide. The visit took place Tuesday, July 3rd.

“It was an excellent opportunity. Liebherr was a wonderful host”, states Sávio. The company supplied us with teaching materials, including a DVD in German and English, and a textbook for a specific course on the effects of wind on crane operation with a focus on the EN 13000 standard.

According to Sávio, Liebherr recommends that the commercial crane-load rating chart should not be used in the course since it is not complete. The best thing to do, according to the company, is to ensure that the rigging plans are elaborated based on the technical chart because that’s the document that will be given to the operator for him/her to configure the crane.

To Wilson de Mello Jr., director of Instituto Opus, it was an excellent opportunity for all those involved. “This visit was important for us to increase, even further, the quality and level of such training in Brazil,” he says. “That’s why I’d like to express my special thanks to the people of Liebherr who helped our instructor with all their attention and care,” Mello Jr. concludes.
