Sobratema Workshop 2014 will analyze challenges and solutions for risk management on worksites

With deadlines more and more shortened and with the continuous search for productivity and sustainability in constructions, risk management is increasing its importance in construction works

Sobratema Workshop 2014, to be carried out in April 8 in São Paulo will discuss several points related to its main subject, Risk Management on Worksites – Challenges and Solutions, to give technical and market knowledge to businessmen, managers, engineers, professionals and experts from construction contractors, insurance companies, design consultants and technical staff of government areas, and to contribute for a more efficient management of risks in construction works.

According to Paulo Oscar Auler Neto, vice-president of Sobratema, the proposed subject is quite relevant, mainly due to the unique moment that Brazil is going through, with a large number of infrastructure works being carried out in the whole country, time schedules more and more shortened and a continuous search for productivity and sustainability.

“These factors contribute to improve risk management, since an incorrect evaluation may cause delays in deadlines, work embargoes  and even—in extreme situations--unfeasibility of the work due to financial reasons”, explains Auler Neto. According to a research carried out by Sobratema, investments foreseen till 2018 in Brazil are of about R$ 1.19 trillion in this area— spread through 8300 works that are being developed or are in the phases of design or intention—spread through eight different areas of the economy: oil and gas, transportation, sanitation, industry, urban infrastructure, sport infrastructure and others.

The event will include four lectures that address relevant information about environmental risks, logistical risks, insurance in worksites, work safety and risk evaluation. “Different types of risks that may occur in construction works have to be gathered, analyzed and monitored. For the Sobratema Workshop, we selected four categories that are important and always are considered inside the works”,says Auler Neto.

The first lecture, given by Marco Martins—consultant of the Instituto Brasileiro de Proteção Ambiental (Brazilian Institute of Environmental Protection – Proam)—will talk about a real case of environmental risks: the northern section of the Rodoanel, in São Paulo. Following this lecture, the professor Hélio Flavio Vieira—from the Department of Civil Engineering of FURB - Fundação Universidade Regional de Blumenau—will present some actions to remedy contingencies and to minimize logistic risks in civil construction.

Luiz Augusto Timbó, partner and executive director of LTSEG insurance Broker will be in charge of the third lecture, talking about risk evaluation and insurance in worksites, including all points that have to be considered when developing the risk array in any work. At the end, Cosmo Palásio de Moraes Jr.—state director of SINTESP (Union of Work Safety Technicians in the State of São Paulo)—will show the most common types of accidents and their consequences in civil construction.

For Auler Neto, the Sobratema Workshop will be a unique opportunity to enlarge the knowledge of risk management, a subject that demands continuous evaluation and monitoring. “An efficient management also contributes to increase competitiveness in worksites,  reducing risks and possible losses of different kinds during the processes”, ends him.
