Sales of construction equipment in 2014 will be reduced in 6 percent

Data was disclosed in the event Tendências no Mercado da Construção

Sales of construction equipment will be reduced in 2014. The retraction will be of 6 percent if compared to 2013. More than 67.7 thousand machines will be sold, against more than 72 thousand units sold in 2013. This conclusion came out from the Sobratema Study of Brazilian Market of Construction Equipment, developed by Sobratema – Brazilian Association of Technology for Construction and Mining, disclosed in November 12 in São Paulo.

The Sobratema Study includes earthmoving equipment—the so-called “yellow line”—as well as equipment such as tower cranes, cranes and aerial platforms, and an estimation of wheel tractors and on-the-road trucks demanded by the construction industry.

The sales reduction in 2014 was due to factors such as the slowdown of Brazilian economy, public policies of infrastructure investments and the period of elections. Sales of the yellow line will be reduced in 12.7 percent in 2014 (compared to 2013), as well as the other categories, including tower cranes, aerial platforms, telehandlers and wheel tractors, which will have an estimated reduction of 14.8 percent in their sales. Machines that showed highest reduction in 2014 (compared to 2013) were backhoes (yellow line) with a drop of 42.6 percent, cranes, with a drop of 46.3 percent and aerial platforms, with a drop of 24.7 percent.

However, the study shows positive results, such as an increase in the sales of compactors (13.2 percent), motor graders (8.3 percent) and loaders (5.2 percent), in addition to on-the-road trucks demanded by the construction industry (6.8 percent). These last three categories increased their sales mainly due to acquisitions carried out by the Ministry of Agrarian Development that would be sent to pre-established municipalities with up to 50 thousand inhabitants and located far from Metropolitan areas, for a set of works that also include the refurbishment of local roads.

Importations will also shrink , according to the Market Study estimations. From January to September of this year, they dropped up to 27 percent if compared with the same period of 2013. Main factors that contributed for this result were the slowdown of the internal market due to the exchange rate devaluation and the change of some importers into national manufacturers due to plants built in the country.

In relation to the works where construction equipment will be used, infrastructure corresponds to most equipment bought in 2014 (32 thousand units) followed by civil construction (25 thousand units).

Projections till 2019

The Sobratema Study of the Brazilian Market of Construction Equipment also presents projections for equipment sales till 2019. From 2016 on, it is estimated a resumption of the industry, depending on the investments in new works—mainly in the area of infrastructure—as well as on the growth of civil construction.

In the case of machine population, those below ten years old will continue to increase in a rate of 6 to 7 percent per year till 2019. Equipment up to four years old will have an estimated decrease till 2016 and a resumption in 2017.

The Sobratema Study of the Brazilian Market of Construction Equipment is published since 2007 and includes main equipment of the yellow line (earthmoving and compaction), in addition to tower cranes, cranes, portable compressors, aerial platforms, telehandlers, wheel tractors and trucks used by construction contractors.

Data are gathered and analyzed by the economic consultation of the economist and journalist Brian Nicholson and of the professor Rubens Sawaya, from PUC-SP. The market study shows the economic importance of this industry, helps in the development of policies that make easy to buy modern and efficient equipment and is also a planning instrument quite useful for the companies that work in the area.
