Ex-minister says—in event promoted by Sobratema—that Brazil has conditions to resume a consistent growth

Trends in the Construction Market also promoted the updating of the Sobratema Equipment Guide and awarded aftersales highlights of the year

Even alerting that Brazilian economy will not retake its pace before 2019, the ex-minister of finance Mailson da Nóbrega listed a series of reasons to believe that after this period Brazil has conditions of retaking a consistent level of growth. The ex-minister made the finishing lecture of the event Trends in the Construction Market, promoted by Sobratema – Brazilian Association of Technology for Construction and Mining in November 11 at São Paulo. The event gathered approximately 350 leading businessmen and professionals from the industries of construction and mining.

“Levels of growth between 2.5 and 4 percent per year—which are the values needed by a country such as Brazil—will not be achieved easily during the next three years”, said the lecturer. “These yearly indicators of growth depend on achieving increase in the general productivity of the economy.  And this increase in productivity depends on some factors such as: investments in logistics and education, tax and labor reform, improvement in government, management of companies and regulating entities”, ended the ex-minister. To reinforce the necessity of increasing productivity, Mailson remembered that 80 percent of the growth rate of the United States in the last years became possible only due to increases in productivity.

At the end of his lecture, the ex-minister remembered that Brazil is more well-prepared to go out of this crisis if compared to other critical moments that occurred in the past. “There is hope and there are reasons to believe that the country still offers good opportunities of expansion. We have solid institutions, a complex and diversified industrial basis, a competitive and dynamic agribusiness, a solid, modern and sophisticated financial system, consolidated democracy, independent judiciary, free press, and a society that is mobilizing itself and is not tolerating high inflation”, affirmed the ex-minister, adding that he thinks to be difficult that the country becomes similar to Argentina or Venezuela.

In addition to the lecture of the ex-minister, the event Trends in the Construction Market had also a lecture about Heavy Construction and Mining under an Economic Approach, carried out by the economist Amaryllis Romano, from Tendências Consultoria Integrada. After a detailed analysis of the international situation, where she evaluated the rate of economic expansion of the main countries due to a decreasing in the prices of the main commodities, the economist focused the triple crisis that is affecting Brazil: tax, economic and politic.

In the economist’s point of view, economic recovering will occur from 2017 on. “And this recovering tends to start on an elevated idle capacity that is being generated currently in the industrial area”, said her. About the construction industry, Amaryllis pointed out that the recovering will probably be more consistent from 2017 on. She estimated the decrease of the GDP of civil construction around 9.4 percent this year. A positive indicator detected by the economist, that reduces a little the negative expectations are the data about the increase in the number of families expected for the next decade.

According to Amaryllis, the projections are of expressive increase in the formation of new families, what will demand additional investments in several areas, also involving construction. “The projections about the increase of the demand by housing are a clear example of this situation. We may notice that the housing deficit will increase, and this will stimulate civil construction and complementary works of urban infrastructure”, ended the lecturer.
